Roman Gomez (Belmont High, Downtown Los Angeles, CA). At the "84" CA State track meet, Gomez was a double winner, completing the tough 1600+3200, for only the second time in meet history (Done by Rich Kimball in 74). He won the 3200 first in 8:58.91, with Matt Guisto (Foot Locker Nat'l X-C Champ) 3rd in 9:05.20. Approximately 80 minutes later, Gomez won the 1600 in 4:09.05. Both times flashing a devastating kick.

(Middle Picture, above) Gomez wins the 440 in a duel meet by .1, with a 51.9, while in lane 1! Oh yeah, Gomez was a junior (as in all pics).

Gomez repeated his double in "85," 4:15.93/ 9:03.05 in cold & windy conditions. He toyed with both fields before pulling away to victory, with an impressive 55.7 last lap in the 1600! With Mark Mastilar (Jesuit) 2nd in 4:16.72. / The 3200, Gomez sped a 59.0 last lap: - 2nd was Calvin Gaziano (Castro Valley) in 9:03.16 - 3rd Eric Mastalir (Jesuit) SJ 9:03.31 (The Mastilar's were juniors).

Tim Danielson (Chula Vista) was the 2nd prep under 4:00 in the mile with a 3:59.4. Shown here leading the Golden West 2 mile, Danielson (CA state mile champ, 65-66) leads Ralph Gamez(Berkeley, CA State 2-mile champ, 65-66). Danielson bested Gamez: 8:55.4 to 8:57.0, for the 3rd and 4th fastest clockings ever in 1966!!

Eric Hulst (Laguna, Jr) runs the fourth-fastest clocking ever(8:44.9, in 75) but he had to run that fast to outkick Ralph Serna (Loara, Sr. -8:45.9)

Above: Hulst is in the lead by the first lap (65.3).

Hulst cruised past the mile in 4:20.8 with Serna and Mitch Kingery (San Carlos, Sr.) staying right behind.

Kingery hung on until 660 to go before fading to 4th (8:57.3). Hulst led a 66.1 for the seventh circuit.

Serna tried to pass Hulst, twice on the backstretch and once on the final bend, but each time Eric fought him off, and with 50y to go Serna could challenge no more. Eric increased his margin to 4y at the finish -last lap in 62.2.

Juniors- Marden (2nd) & Butler (3rd) are edged by Senior Andy DiConti (La Canada)

Meb Keflezighi (San Diego). Meb attempted the double at CA state track meet as a junior, placing 3rd/1600 + 2nd/3200.

As a senior (94), Meb succeeded with an 4:07.67/1600 + 8:58.11/3200!!

Jay Marden (Mission San Jose) placed 6th at the initial Kinney Nat'l x-country champs as a junior. The next year (80), Marden finished 1st. Jon Butler (Edison) was 2nd (4 seconds back).

Jon Butler (Edison) won the CA state 3200 (81) in 8:46.78. Jay Marden (MSJ) was 2nd in 8:51.64.

Butler was also at the first Kinney Nat'l and was 8th.

June 1, 2013 - CA State Track Meet @ Clovis, CA

Stockdale HS Junior, Blake Haney pulled off the distance double, winning the 1600 (L, 4:06.91) & 3200 (R, 9:01.65).

Stockdale senior, Haney was successful in defending the 1600 in 4:08.52...

In the 3200, Haney was veryclose (3rd in 8:58.48) to duplicating Los Angeles City track legend, Belmont distance star, Roman Gomez (foreground) for a double/double!!

Roman Gomez won the distance double in back-to-back years: '84-'85.

Curtis Beck (Santa Monica High, CA) Class of "73." Outdoors as a junior, Beck blazed a national class record of 8:48.8, the 3rd best prep performance in history for 2 miles (in 1972). Only Steve Prefontaine, the HSR holder (at the time) at 8:41.5 & Rick Riley, 8:48.4, have run faster. Beck also breezed to a 4:04.2 mile! (2nd best junior behind Ryun's 3:59.0 from "64") 6th best prep overall(in 72). Beck led the nation in both events(mile/2mile) and also did 1:52.3(880y). Jr-Craig Virgin was next @ 2miles (8:52.0)

As a senior, the 5'8'' 155-pound Beck sped: 1:51.5 (880y), 4:05.6 & 4:07.1 (mile) and 9:02.0 for 2 miles.(Virgin ran the 8:40.9!).
