Rono took the lead for good with a 660 meters to go, racing the last lap in under 60 (interior water jump) winning easily in 8:18.0.

By 7,000 meters the 34-man field was down to five contenders, Salazar was the lone American. Suleiman Nyambui and UTEP teammate (and defending champion) Mike Musyoki. Joel Cheruiyot (WSU) and Joseph Nzau (Wy). All but Nyambui are Kenyans.

Nyambui, the 28-year old Freshman and veteran Tanzanian, grabbed the lead for good with 5½ laps left.

Nzau was dropped with 800 left and Cheruiyot was out of it at the bell. Salazar kept up with the two Texans but with 230m left, the race was over. Nyambui whippped through the last lap in 54.8 (last 800 in 2:00.1) - 28:01.30. Musyoki (28:03.25) and Salazar (28:06.12) both bettered the championship record. A PR for Salazar, and only Craig Virgin among American collegians had run faster.

Rudy Chapa took the lead immediately & paced the field through fast 1000m splits 2:39.4, 5:21.6, 8:06.1 & 10:51.6.

Rudy Chapa had twisted his ankle 3 days before the final, but showed little sign of it.

Looming in 3rd behind Chapa and Adrian Leek (East Tennessee) is Villanova distance man, Sydney Maree.

Sydney Maree, the sophomore from South Africa, unleashed a devastating kick.

 

Sydney Maree pulled away with a 52.2 last lap!
Maree's last 2 laps were 1:56.0!!

Chap a ran a 56.9 last lap to finish in 13:25.4.

Maree sets a NCAA meet record -13:20.63 (4th fastest in collegiate history and broke the record of 13:21.9 set by Henry Rono last year, 1978. In becoming Villanova's first-ever NCAA 5000 winner, Maree snaps a string of Oregon (6) & WSU (3) winners going back to 1969 (in '69, USC's Ole Oleson won).

Joaquim Cruz, after setting a junior world record of 1:44.3 in 1981, he received a scholarship for the University of Oregon in 1983. The move immediately paid off, and Cruz won the NCAA championships over 800m that same year (above).
