Class is small. A short list: Kimball, Virgin, Sage. All-time prep same-day outdoor distance doublers' (Mile/2M). On May 31, 2008, CA state meet at Cerritos College 17 year old German Fernandez (Riverbank) skipped the grade altogether. |
Fernandez was only a 9:08.05 3200 performer last year but he came to this meet with impressive credentials. In x-country, Fernandez annihilated the renowned Woodward Park course record by 14 seconds raising the eyebrows of Californians. And he won the SJS section finals with the 6th best prep outdoor distance double with a 4:07.62 / 8:45.08 (1600/3200)!! But it was at the state track meet: First the 1600. Fernandez rips the opening 200 in 30.9 and posts a 60.5 400. By 600 he's solo, but against the wind yet Fernandez blazes a 4:00.29. And suddenly, Rich Kimball's much heralded distance double from '74 (34yrs ago) seems probable. 2 hours 21 minutes later Fernandez lines up for the 3200. After the 200 (31.9), Fernandez is in charge and running steady 64's. By 3½ laps he separates himself from the field. The determined Fernandez will do it alone and battle cross-winds! Fernandez runs negative splits (4:18.8, 4:15.4) clocking a 61.6 last 400 wrapping up a record 8:34.23, sealing his place among the elite atop the acclaimed distance double list in U. S. prep history as well as national prominence. **4:00.29/8:34.23 = 4:01.79 / 8:37.43 for Mile/2Mile!! |
