1982, a changing of the guard looms, a new name emerges...

Ovett's 1982 season was wrecked by injury. When out training on the streets of Brighton in late 1981, he ran into some railings at St. John the Baptist Church on New Church Road and badly twisted his knee. He had recovered by the spring of 1982, but further injuries hampered his progress managing: (1500) 3:38.48 & (2)(800) 1:46.08.

Coe had a short season in 1982 because of injuries in June and July. Coe unexpectedly won only silver in the 800 in the 1982 European Championships in Athletics in Athens. The next day British team doctors revealed that Coe had been suffering from glandular fever. He decided to withdraw from the 1500 metres in those European Championships. Coe still managed to rank number one in the world in the 800 metres with seasonal best of 1:44.48 to win Weltklasse & participate in a world record 4 x 800 metres relay (Coe, Peter Elliott, Garry Cook & Steve Cram) in 7:03.89 (the WR would last 24 years) . Coe's leg was the fastest of the day, a solo 1:44.01.

Steve Cram & Steve Scot
1982 did not see any world records, but did see Steve Scott set the U.S. mile record of 3:47.69.

With Coe & Ovett generally absent from races the new kid on British middle-distance block had arrived;
In that year, Steve Cram won the 1500m at the European Championships in Athens.

1999

In the span of a year, 20 year-old Kenyan, Noah Ngeny has gone from pacemaker to potential record-breaker...

1999, Ngeny who has run the three fastest 1,500 metres times this season and pushed Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj to the Mile World Record less than two weeks (7/7) ago in Rome, 3:43.13 to 3:43.40.

July 17, 1999, NICE, France, Saturday,  Noah Ngeny ran the second-fastest 1,000 metres ever as Sebastian Coe's world record narrowly withstood another challenge at Nikaia athletics meet (R).
In still, calm conditions, Ngeny roared round the track in the French Riviera twilight in 2:12.66 seconds, just short of Coe's time of 2:12.18 set 18 years ago in Oslo and the oldest individual record in the athletics record books. Ngent followed the pacer,  through much of the race, powering to the front with 200 metres to go... But Ngeny timed his move a little late, falling just short of Coe's mark but moving ahead of another Briton, Steve Cram, in the all-time rankings.
