Bill McChesney - South Eugene High School _ Class of "77" Won 3 Oregon State Cross Country titles. McChesney was a long shot to make the "80" Olympic team due to an injury-plagued spring. To keep fit, McChesney turned to the pool-becoming one of the first athletes to utilize water workouts. Bill McChesney made an all or nothing move with one mile left in the 5,000 meter run. It was his surge that brought the sellout crowd of 19,352 to its feet. It was the most electrifying moment of the Trials as the hometown hero gamely hung on for third place with a time of 13:34.42, just under the Olympic qualifying standard of 13:35.0. The fourth-place finisher, Jerald Jones, clocked 13:34.71. McChesney holds the University of Oregon school records in the 5,000 (13 minutes, 14.80 seconds) & 10,000 (27:50.82).(4/29/07-Rupp rewrites UO 10k-27:33.48 |
