Tom Graves(Carl Sandburg, IL) placed third in the Illinois state x-country meet as a sophomore and never looked back. Won state 2-mile that spring in 9:00.52. Owned the Illinois distances, even beat Spivey. Bests: 4:09.3 mile & 8:51.9 for two miles. Class of "78."
Tom Graves breaks the tape in 9:06.91 to win the 2-mile for the 3rd time @ the IL State Meet. Graves capped his HS career with a mile-two mile double. Graves conserved his strength in the heat(90°), taking the lead in the final 600yards, in the 2M. The mile: Graves won a thriller, gaining the lead in final 110 yards to win in 4:09.37!
Nat'l Jr. 8-kilo X-Country Championships 1978. Kevin Byrne (Georgetown frosh, 4:06mi & 8:59.7 indoor-2M) nips Rod Berry (Redwood, CA, 8:53.4-2M) and Tom Graves (Sandburg) ...Times:23:46.3, 23:46.5, 23:46.8!!! - 4:51 pace!
Tom Graves went to Auburn. At the NCAA cross country (78) championships, he was the top freshman.(13th) beating Spivey (15th) by 5 seconds. Rudy Chapa was 14th. Al Salazar won.

Mitch Kingery (San Carlos, CA) is soaking after a run in the rain. He nears the finish of his then prep record marathon of 2:23:47 (5:29 pace), as a Sophomore! He ran 2:29:11 as a freshman (5:41 average). Kingery (class of "75") The center meet was almost cancelled due to a smog alert. Mitch(a junior) ripped a prep record of 14:28 on the famed Crystal Springs x-country course. (Jay Marden tied the mark in "80")

Battle at Pleasanton 20 K. Kimball (Jr) was 2nd (64:19) & Kingery (soph) 3rd (64:39). Kimball avg-5:10 per mile for the 12.4 miles. Kingery avg- 5:12-6 DAYS after his 2:23:47!

The 1979 NCAA cross country championships was notable for Jim Spivey (Indiana). Spivey beat Tom Graves by 3 seconds.

Don Clary (East, Anchorage, 75) Alaska's premier prep distance runner. Don won 3 state titles on the same day!!! First the mile: 4:14.9, NEXT the two mile: 9:04.4 and on the mile relay, helping East to capture their first state championship and earned a scholarship to the U of O. Clary is an "84" Olympian at 5,000 m.

Clary, a freshman, is up against John Ngeno (WSU), a senior, the defending NCAA 3-Mile and 6-Mile (Metric in 76) champion race at 5,000 meters.

The 18-year-old frosh from Anchorage went from last to first by charging from 500 yards out to clock a PB 13:45.2 to Ngeno's 13:49.2. Lost in Clary's great moment was a 13:51.4 by Terry Williams for 3rd. Oregon won the Duel meet.

Oregons top NCAA finishers for X-Country in "77-79." Oregon won the NCAA team title in 77. The Ducks were runners-up in 78 & 79.
